Door furniture is a generic term used for various door fittings like hinges, handles, knobs, locks and others. Iron is the commonest metal used to make these products as it is very strong and tough. Made in ironmongery, these things provide much needed support and security to the doors.

To provide best usage, these door accessories should be fitted appropriately.  For instance, Door Hinge is fitted in pairs. The number and size of the hinges used depends upon the size and weight of the door. For the larger and heavy doors, the ones used at exterior of the house, hinges should be very strong, thick and large. For a 6 feet high door, usually three hinges are used. Cheap variety hinges may be joined with pins at their joints while better quality hinges have ball bearings in their joint giving smooth movement. To fit the hinges, a position is marked on the door and the frame each. Those   marked areas are cut using a chisel to make recesses for fixing hinge.   Screws are used to fix hinges on to the door and the frame.

Usually one door knob or handle is required for each door. Apart from this, there are combined versions of door handles and latch. Below the operating mechanism, a hole is given for the key to lock the door.   They can be fitted simply using screws. To avoid bending of screws, first drill a small prehole in the door.

There are several other things you can fit on doors including locks, hooks, door bells, letterboxes and others.
