The prices are higher because the cruise always sells out over the holidays and people are willing to pay the higher price. You have to show proof that you've already purchased your cruise to get past security. There isn't anywhere to "buy" on to a cruise ship. They have printed passenger lists and your room cards already made up. I assume these can be changed if the information is wrong, but I don't think they'd change the whole passenger list to get someone on, even if there was room. You're lucky if you can ever even have the option of "upgrading" once you get there. Book it and don't be disappointed. Prices will go up if anything. There is no way this would work.
